Wonder Woman 2017

The DC Extended universe has been sort of a rocky road. I didn’t care for Man of Steel, Batman v Superman had its moments but ultimately was a huge mess (Though I hear the extended cut is better), and Suicide Squad………..moving on. Point is, I didn’t really think they had produced an actual good movie……until now. Wonder Woman is not just good, it’s actually great. And it feels so good to come out of a DC film and say that.

There’s a lot of things to really enjoy about this, but I think the main reason why this movie works so well is Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. She was easily one of the standouts in Batman v Superman last year and she is even better in her own solo movie. She really embodies the character really well and is just so charming and charismatic in the role, it’s impossible not to root for her or smile. She also has some good chemistry with Chris Pine who’s deadpan delivery is very funny. It’s maybe no surprise there’s a romance between the two, and it’s very believable. The action scenes are also very well done with several stand out sequences and choreography (I won’t give away how it plays out, but there’s a part involving Wonder Woman and a tower that is so freakin’ awesome). There’s also a hopeful and optimistic tone about it that I also greatly appreciate. The other DC films up to now have been either too drab or depressing and just didn’t leave me feeling good coming out of them. This is the first time I came out of one feeling happy after one of these. Wonder Woman is a very optimistic and hopeful person who actively wants to save people and do the right thing even as things get in her way. That can be very inspiring not just to kids (especially girls) but even for grown adults. It’s the first time the superheroes in this universe felt like superheroes.

Honestly the big low points in the movie I can think of with this movie are the villains. This movie has the same issue that a lot of Marvel movies tend to face, and that is that while the heroes are done well, the villains are kind of left in the shuffle. The two villains seemed kind of stock and didn’t seem all that interesting. But that wasn’t enough of a turn off for me. I can watch plenty of movies that have weak villains over and over again, and I think the same can be said with this. The rest are just minor nitpicks that I won't really get into since they're really inconsequential.

On the whole, Wonder Woman is an absolutely (to put it bluntly) ‘wonderful’ movie. A lot really works about it. The action is great, the story is well paced and Gal Gadot is very delightful and practically IS Wonder Woman. If you liked the other DCEU movies, you’ll like this. If you didn’t like the other DCEU movies, you’ll still like this. And I feel so happy to come out of a DC movie (not done in LEGOs) and come out really loving it. It feels so good to say that. Now I do have more hope for Justice League.

I love the review you gave about the movie. And I agree on most points. The villains are a bit forgettable, but in the same sense, for me, they felt more memorable than most Marvel villains. Maybe because of their look, or because the big reveal of Aeries was a recognizable actor from another franchise movie. In any case, something tells me that we'll be seeing more of Aeries if they continue making DCEU movies. I do love your take on Wonder Woman. The colors definitely pop! And the contouresc of your outline gives it a lot of originality and detail. Amazing piece of work! :D I would love for you to enter this in our Wonder Woman Contest, but I would have to ask you to change the title to "Wonder Woman 2017 Contest" for it to count. If not, I'd also be glad to place it into a different folder. Thanks for contributing your amazing art to our group!
